Nouthetic
counseling encompasses ALL of God's word, not just part of it, as
some may think and do practise.
Nouthetic comes from the Greek word nouthesia, which implies scriptural direction. In Nouthetic counseling God's word is used as a standard and guide-line, not any secular textbook or Christian textbook with the author's opinion. Neither the use of Psychotherapy, nor the personal point of view of the counselor.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Romans 15:14 And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
Colossians 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
Nouthetic counseling is Christ centered and a "directive" way of counseling, as opposed to most secular "non-directive" counseling methodology. It uses the authority of God. Therefore it is neither arbitrary nor oppressive. It does not function merely as a sounding board but is confrontational and discerning.

This approach
includes the following: discerning sin or wrong doings in the
counselee; admonishing; confronting with the Word of God; motivating
for change; providing direction from the Scripture; teaching the word
of God; leading the counselee to confession, repentance,
reconciliation and restoration; supporting and encouraging the
counselee in his walk with God.

When Biblical counseling is applied in God's authority it will be right to the point and direct. No hiding behind vague words. Nouthetic counseling is active, not passive. It is open and honest, straight forward and almost to the point of being blunt. It is geared to change, it is radical, and clearly presents a choice to the client: to follow in God's way or the way of sin.

Nouthetic counseling is the most effective way of counseling that I know of, with fast results, because it is based on God's word. God's word is the truth, and the truth shall set you free. (John 17:17, John 8:32).

It is not about pleasing man, but rather God. And by doing so it will
benefit the counselee. Therefore, we have to come to an absolute
understanding that God's word is and stays powerful, spoken and/or
written. In Genesis we read: "God spoke and it WAS." And
because we have the Bible, I would like to state: "God wrote and
here it IS."
Nouthetic counseling is motivated by love and deep concern of them that administer it. The practising counselor needs to have the love of God, faith and hope in order to have an effective influence on the counselee.

The application of Nouthetic counseling through the Internet presents God's word without the pressure of the counselor's presence. I do find e-mail counseling a very powerful tool in my Practice. There is not much exchange of personal emotions between counselee and counselor, but more emphasis on God's word, thus less side-tracking of the human issues. This way both can concentrate more on God's word. It also directs the counselee to focus more on the Lord for answers than on the counselor, which is exactly what Christian counseling is all about.

Besides giving direction in becoming obedient to God's word, it is appropriate and necessary for the counselor to pray with the counselee, and to bring everything before the Lord, asking Him for guidance and revelation. The Gift of discernment will assist the counselor to pinpoint underlying issues such as; bondage, addiction or hidden sin. If the counselee is willing to go God's way but is hindered by overwhelming powers of darkness and/or oppressed by evil spirits of lust, occultism, depression or sickness, he/she needs first to be set free before one can respond to God's will and submit to His word.
In the above case the counselor must act upon God's word, in agreement with the counselee, by the laying on of hands and/or casting out of demons, as commanded by Jesus Christ in Mark 16:17-18 and Matthew 28:20. These acts of obedience, on the counselor's part, will be confirmed by God, the Father, with miracles and wonders, according to His word. The counselor must use any of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit available to him in order to bring the counselee to full restoration in Christ. Paul's instructions in 1 Corinthians, Chapters 12, 13 and 14 are still applicable for today and until Christ's return.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
One may conclude that there rests great responsibility on the shoulders of the counselor to obey God's word in helping others in need, by presenting the "whole" of the Gospel.
Acts 20:20 & 27 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shown you, and have taught you publicly... For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
The personal walk with God, the dedication to God's will, and the love and compassion for others will determine how successful the counselor will be in leading the counselee to freedom in Christ, for the glory of God and the extension of His Kingdom.
